Troubleshooting Aspose.Cells FOSS for Java
Every exception Aspose.Cells FOSS for Java throws extends CellsException,
a RuntimeException subclass, so catching that one type covers all
library-thrown errors. This guide walks through diagnosing the specific
exceptions and unexpected results developers hit most often.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Install the Package
<dependency>
<groupId>org.aspose</groupId>
<artifactId>aspose-cells-foss</artifactId>
<version>26.7.0</version>
</dependency>Step 2: Catch the Common Base Exception Type
Wrap workbook construction and saving in a single catch block for
CellsException to get a consistent diagnostic point, then narrow to a
specific subtype if needed:
import org.aspose.cells_foss.CellsException;
import org.aspose.cells_foss.Workbook;
try (Workbook workbook = new Workbook("input.xlsx")) {
workbook.save("output.xlsx");
} catch (CellsException e) {
System.err.println("Aspose.Cells FOSS error: " + e.getMessage());
}Step 3: Diagnose InvalidFileFormatException on Load
This is thrown when the Workbook constructor cannot parse the input as a
valid .xlsx ZIP package — either the bytes are not a ZIP archive, or the
ZIP does not contain the required workbook part:
import org.aspose.cells_foss.InvalidFileFormatException;
try (Workbook workbook = new Workbook("maybe-corrupt.xlsx")) {
// ...
} catch (InvalidFileFormatException e) {
System.err.println("Not a readable xlsx package: " + e.getMessage());
}Confirm the file was downloaded or copied as binary (not transferred in a
text mode that could alter byte content), and that it is genuinely an
.xlsx file rather than a renamed .xls or .csv file.
Step 4: Diagnose WorkbookSaveException on Save
Workbook.save(...) throws this when the workbook has zero worksheets —
most often because WorksheetCollection.removeAt(...) removed the last
remaining sheet:
import org.aspose.cells_foss.WorkbookSaveException;
try {
workbook.save("output.xlsx");
} catch (WorkbookSaveException e) {
System.err.println("Cannot save: " + e.getMessage());
}Call WorksheetCollection.getCount() before saving to confirm at least
one sheet remains.
Step 5: Diagnose UnsupportedFeatureException on Save
This is thrown when SaveOptions.setSaveFormat(…) is set to anything
other than the library’s working XLSX value before calling
Workbook.save(fileName, options):
import org.aspose.cells_foss.UnsupportedFeatureException;
try {
workbook.save("output.xlsx", options);
} catch (UnsupportedFeatureException e) {
System.err.println("Unsupported save format: " + e.getMessage());
}Check what SaveOptions.getSaveFormat() currently returns if this is unexpected — only the XLSX value is backed by a working writer.
Step 6: Diagnose an UnsupportedOperationException from the Xml*Mapper Classes
SharedStringTableXmlMapper, StylesheetXmlMapper, WorkbookXmlMapper,
and WorksheetXmlMapper each declare read/write methods, but every one of
them unconditionally throws in the current release. If this exception
surfaces, the fix is to stop calling these four classes directly — normal
Workbook loading and saving does not go through them, and the low-level
XlsxWorkbookSerializer class is the working alternative for XML-level
access (see
how-to-extract-xml-java).
Common Issues and Fixes
Style or conditional-format changes silently don’t apply.
Cell.getStyle() and FormatCondition.getStyle() both return a detached
copy of the current style. After modifying the font, borders, or fill on
the returned object, call setStyle(style) again on the same cell or
condition — otherwise the modification is discarded.
A formula cell shows the original value, not a recalculated one. The library stores and round-trips formula text but does not evaluate formulas. Open the saved file in a spreadsheet application (or any tool with a formula engine) to see calculated results.
Loading a .xls file throws InvalidFileFormatException. Only the
Open XML .xlsx container is supported; legacy binary .xls (BIFF)
files are not readable by this release.
A validation or conditional-formatting range looks shifted by one row
or column. CellArea’s four-argument constructor takes zero-based
(firstRow, firstColumn, totalRows, totalColumns) — a common mistake is
treating the third and fourth arguments as end-row/end-column instead of
counts.
Workbook construction never returns and appears to hang. This usually
means the input stream was not fully readable (for example, a network
stream that stalls) rather than a library defect — confirm the source
stream or file is complete and accessible before passing it to the
Workbook constructor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a single exception type I can catch for everything the library might throw?
Yes. Every library-thrown exception extends CellsException, so a single
catch block for that type is a safe outer boundary; narrow to
InvalidFileFormatException, WorkbookSaveException,
UnsupportedFeatureException, or StyleException for more specific
handling.
Why does reading a workbook succeed but saving it fails?
Loading and saving are validated differently. A file can load successfully
and still fail on save if, for example, every worksheet was removed in
between, or SaveOptions was configured with a save-format value other than XLSX.
Does retrying the same operation ever help?
Not for the exceptions covered here — they reflect either a structural problem with the input file or an unsupported call, not a transient condition. Fix the underlying cause (valid package, at least one worksheet, a save-format value of XLSX) rather than retrying.
Where do I report a bug that isn’t covered here?
